/ Number Four / 2003

The main exhibition at Constitution Hill was developed in Number Four, the building that once held sentenced, black male prisoners. This prison – which is the dark heart of the site – was in a state of complete ruin. Decisions had to be made as to how the buildings were to be preserved and how exhibitions were to tell the story of the brutality of the jail. A curatorial policy was adopted and the design principles were established. The exhibition team worked closely with the ex-prisoners to develop the exhibition narrative and to design the exhibits. Some of the installations were created using prison blankets so that the language of the exhibition evoked the time that the building functioned as a prison.
