Trace was commissioned to create an exhibition of photographer Alf Kumalo’s soccer photographs for Soccerex, held at the Sandton Convention Centre in October 2008. Soccerex is a very important event on the football calendar and attracts senior people in the soccer/football industry. Thousands of visitors attended the event.
Alf Kumalo began his photographic career at Bantu World in the 1950’s. He has since worked at Golden City Post, the Sunday Times, Drum and The Star. He has photographed Sophiatown, the Rivonia Trial, and the Soweto Uprising. He has an incredible collection of images, which he has taken over fifty years. In recognition of his great contribution to the struggle for democracy, he was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in silver, one of the highest awards that can be bestowed on a South African. Alf Kumalo is well known for incredible action photographs of some of the most talented South African soccer players of our time and it is these photographs that are the subject of this exhibition.
